’EYE’ CAN SEE CLEARLY NOW – HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR CONTACTS

4th July 2011 by Cataracts No Comments

Different kinds of contact lenses need different care and maintenance routines and it is important to adhere to directions in order to ensure optimum safety and health for your precious eyes.

Your eye-care specialist will always set out a care regime that is tailored to your type of contacts, but if you’re in any doubt, always get expert advice, say professional Perth contacts supplier, Student Contact Lenses.  The fundamental rule is always use products that have been recommended by the doctor, and remember that there are some products that are not safe for use by contact lens wearers.

The most popular type of contacts are soft lenses, but these are easily ruined if they are not properly looked after.  And because they are more prone to contamination, it’s essential that they are cleaned and disinfected on a regular basis to prevent bacterial infection or other problems.

The basic routine involves cleaning, disinfecting, soaking, rinsing and then storing the lenses.  If this isn’t done properly, then oil and protein deposits will form on the lenses and then harden, which not only causes distorted vision but also shortens the wearable life of the contacts.

These deposits are entirely normal and form as a result of regular tears in the eye, but the problems start when they are left to harden.

Liquid enzyme cleaners or tablets are used to remove the protein build-up.  This is done on a daily or weekly basis, depending on the type of contacts you wear.  Your doctor may also advise you to rub your lenses regularly (with a few drops of solution) to clear away any deposits.

Following the cleaning and rinsing, the lenses should be put into a clean lens case to soak for period of time.  Keeping the lens case clean is another important thing to remember.  It should be cleaned and air-dried (not dried with a cloth or towel) and replaced regularly.

Keep a close watch on the ‘use-by’ dates on your solution and throw away any product you haven’t used.  Many eyecare products (such as Acuvue, Bausch products) can be bought online, and contact lenses can also be purchased over the internet (with a valid prescription).

For any enquiries regarding contact lens care, contact your local eye-care professional in Perth as they will have a routine especially designed for your individual needs.
